Australia is transitioning from Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) to Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL). Portable gas-detector fleets should be reviewed early so affected instruments can be identified, settings verified and authorised updates planned.
What is Changing?
From 1 December 2026, the WEL list is scheduled to replace the current WES list, following implementation into applicable WHS laws.
What should customers do?
Review detector models, installed sensors and current alarm/TWA configurations before the transition date.
Carbon monoxide is the key portable-monitor change
For many portable instruments supplied and maintained by Aegis Sales & Service, carbon monoxide (CO) is the most common affected sensor. The published CO time-weighted average is reducing from 30 ppm to 20 ppm. Detector settings are model-and configuration-dependent, so Aegis Sales & Service will verify the instrument before making an operational change.

Other gases may also be affected
Changes are not limited to CO. Portable or specialty monitors configured for gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3) and nitric oxide (NO) may also require review. Some published exposure limits reduce, while other contaminants may have different treatment. Aegis Sales & Service will verify the applicable requirement before recommending a setting change.
Plan the transition
Recommended now: identify portable monitors containing CO, SO2, NH3, NO or other affected sensors. Where a lower future limit can be introduced without conflicting with current obligations, Aegis Sales & Service can assess an early authorised update.
Important: until the transition, PCBUs must continue to comply with the current WES list. Any configuration change must be assessed against the device model, sensor capability, firmware, customer requirements and applicable WHS obligations.

Make, model, serial number, site and installed sensor
2. Verify
Current alarm/TWA settings, firmware and supported configuration
3. Authorise and update
Complete approved changes during workshop or field service, then test and document
