The Aegis Evolution: From a Family Legacy to One of Australia’s Safety Category Leaders

In the industrial heart of Brisbane, a transition is occurring that represents the future of Australian workplace safety. Aegis Sales & Service—a name synonymous with technical reliability for over four decades—is entering a new era. At the helm is Kimberley Nunn, the newly appointed General Manager and the third generation of the Colhoun family to lead the organisation.

But this isn't just a story of family succession; it is a story of industrial professionalisation. As Queensland prepares for a decade of unprecedented growth leading up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Aegis is positioning itself not merely as a supplier, but as a "Category Leader" in integrated safety solutions.

The Foundation: From Robleen Distributors to Technical Titans

To understand where Aegis is going, one must look back to June 1984. Founded by Robert and Eileen Colhoun as Robleen Distributors, the business began with a fundamental mission: providing the essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that kept the Queensland workforce moving.

"My grandparents understood that safety was the bedrock of productivity," says Kimberley Nunn. "They started with the basics—the gloves, the boots, the glasses. But even then, they were building a brand based on trust and local reliability."

As the Australian industrial landscape grew more complex, so did the business. Kimberley’s father steered the company into specialised Engineered Height-Safety Solutions, introducing global benchmarks like Latchways to the domestic market. Simultaneously, her uncle expanded the company’s technical footprint into Gas Detection through TechInspect.

Eventually, these specialised silos were unified under the Aegis Sales & Service banner. Today, the acquisition of Procon Instrument Technology and the expansion into high-end instrumentation has turned Aegis into a "Full-Stack" safety partner.

Positioning Aegis Sales & Service for the Future

Due to a combination of its history, internal expertise, extensive industry engagement and experience, Aegis is in a unique position as a category leader.

Coming into 2026, the leadership team at Aegis is looking at new ways it can engage its Tier 1 clients, as the procurement process continues to evolve.

It recognised that due to its history, experience and ongoing client feedback that it had a wealth of knowledge to draw on that could greatly benefit their partners.

"We spent the last two months mapping our technical expertise against the needs of the modern procurement officer," Kimberley explains.

"Whether it’s a government agency searching for gamma sensors or procurement leads at Santos or Origin Energy seeking instrumentation maintenance; our goal is to ensure that Aegis is recognised as a 'source of truth' in safety.”

This period of ‘calibration’ has allowed Aegis to enter February at full tilt. The focus has shifted from mere product supply to entity mapping; ensuring that every solution Aegis provides is backed by a robust data framework that proves its compliance, reliability, and technical superiority.

The Tier 1 Advantage: Agility Meets Scale

One of the unique value propositions Kimberley brings to her role is the ability to maintain the "personal care" of a family business while servicing some of the largest corporations in the Southern Hemisphere.

Aegis currently services a staggering range of clients—from independent local contractors to giants like Qantas, Brisbane City Council, Aldi, Queensland Government departments, and the University of Queensland. "We have over 5,000 customers on the books, and some of those relationships span decades," says Kimberley. "But we are also dealing with cutting-edge technology like gamma sensors used by security services to detect radiation. That is the duality of Aegis: we are small enough to care about the individual worker’s boots, but sophisticated enough to manage radiation detection for national security."

Teir 1 Honeywell Platinum Partner

A Honeywell Tier 1 Platinum Partnership

Validation of this technical sophistication came in the form of the Honeywell Tier 1 Platinum status. This is not a title handed out lightly; it is reserved for partners who demonstrate the highest level of competency in technical instrumentation and safety systems.

"Being a Platinum partner allows us to bridge the gap between global innovation and local application," Kimberley notes. "It gives our clients—particularly in the utilities and gas sectors—exclusive access to the most advanced sensor technologies and maintenance protocols available today."

This commitment to the industry will be on full display at the end of this month at the WIOA (Water Industry Operators Association of Australia) exhibition in Bundaberg. As a major sponsor of the Queensland Operator of the Year award, Aegis is taking its place at the head of the table, rewarding the very operators they work to keep safe every day.

The Roadmap to 2032: Securing the Olympic Legacy

As Brisbane prepares for the 2032 Olympics, the infrastructure "unbundling" has already begun. For Aegis, 2032 represents more than a deadline; it is a catalyst for elevating the standards of the entire safety category in Queensland.

Aegis is currently developing a series of "Think Pieces" and strategic frameworks designed to assist government and private contractors in navigating the complex procurement landscape of the Games. By positioning itself as a leader in Aviation, Aerospace, and Government Utilities, Aegis is ensuring that the infrastructure built for the Olympics is the safest in the world.

"We want to be a byword for safety in the lead-up to 2032," says Kimberley. "Our Brisbane headquarters puts us at the epicenter of this growth. We are ready to provide the engineered solutions that will build the stadiums, the transport hubs, and the energy grids of the future."

Looking Ahead: A Vision of Frictionless Safety

As Aegis moves forward, the focus is on solution architecture. The industry is moving away from transactional product purchases toward integrated maintenance and compliance "loops."

Under Kimberley’s leadership, Aegis is professionalising its operations to meet this demand. The goal is a "frictionless" experience for the customer - where compliance is automated, instrumentation is always calibrated, and the "legacy of care" started by Robert and Eileen Colhoun is backed by 21st-century data science.

"I am not just managing a company; I am stewarding a legacy," Kimberley concludes. "But the best way to honor that legacy is to innovate. We are moving from being a local distributor to a national leader. The deep-dive is over. The calibration is complete. We are at full tilt."
